Florida State Men’s Basketball Defeats Virginia Tech in Second-Half Surge

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Florida State Seminoles rallied in the second half to defeat the Virginia Tech Hokies 92-69 on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at Cassell Coliseum. Sophomore Martin Somerville led all scorers with 23 points, propelling FSU to their fourth win in the last five games.

Trailing 42-39 at halftime, Florida State outscored Virginia Tech 53-27 in the final 20 minutes. This victory marks FSU’s first win in Blacksburg since February 2020 and their third ACC road win of the 2025-26 season.

Somerville’s performance was particularly impactful, scoring 18 of his 23 points in the second half while shooting a perfect 7-for-7 from the field during that span. He also contributed six rebounds, four assists, and one steal. His 23 points tied his best scoring output in a Seminoles uniform.

Chauncey Wiggins added 19 points for Florida State, while Robert McCray V and Lajae Jones each chipped in with 17. Jones also led the team with seven rebounds.

The Seminoles’ offensive explosion saw them shoot 61.8% from the field a season-best, and 52.2% from beyond the arc. This performance came after a season-low 29% shooting performance against Virginia in their previous game.

Florida State reached 201 steals on the season, becoming the third ACC team to surpass the 200 mark. Lajae Jones and Alex Steen each recorded two blocks, contributing to the team’s total of 95 blocks this season, with Jones leading the team.

Virginia Tech was led by Tobi Lawal and Ben Hammond, who each scored 16 points. Jailen Bedford added 13, and Neoklis Avdalas and Amari Hansberry both scored 10. However, the Hokies struggled from the field, shooting just 44% overall.

The game saw a back-and-forth first half, with Virginia Tech holding a narrow lead at the break. Wiggins kept the Seminoles within striking distance with 10 points in the first half. FSU trailed by five points early in the second half before Somerville’s scoring surge took over.

Somerville scored 16 of FSU’s 18 points in a little over five minutes of the second half, extending the Seminoles’ lead from five to 13 points. Florida State closed out the game on a 19-9 run, shooting 78.3% from the field in the second half.

The Seminoles out-rebounded the Hokies 28-26 and committed only five turnovers.
