Martinez Miraculously Spared: Premier League Reveals Why Star Player Dodged Red Card for Reckless Tackle
Premier League Explains Lisandro Martinez’s Yellow Card for Two-Footed Tackle
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez’s two-footed tackle on Crystal Palace midfielder Daichi Kamada sparked controversy, but the Premier League has clarified why he escaped a red card.
The incident occurred in the second half of Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace in the English Premier League on September 21. Martinez attempted to win the ball back from Kamada, who had reached the ball first in front of their penalty area.
As Martinez jumped with two feet to win the ball, he made minimal contact with the ball and did not hit Kamada. However, referee David Coote deemed the tackle dangerous and gave Martinez a yellow card in the 63rd minute.
Following the game, many questioned whether a yellow card was sufficient punishment for Martinez’s tackle. In response, the Premier League Match Center, a new initiative aimed at explaining referee decisions, addressed the incident:
“The referee gave Martinez a yellow card for his tackle on Kamada. VAR checked to see if there was a chance of a red card and confirmed that the referee had not given a red card. It was considered a careless collision, and he did not touch Kamada in any way.”
This explanation highlights the referee’s decision-making process and the factors that influenced the choice to issue a yellow card instead of a red card.
