Maruti Suzuki Increases Rail Transport for vehicle Dispatches, Reducing Emissions

Maruti Suzuki is increasingly utilizing Indian Railways for vehicle dispatches, with a record 518,000 vehicles transported in fiscal year 2024-25. This figure represents approximately one-fourth of the company’s total vehicle dispatches for the year. The move highlights Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to sustainable logistics and reducing its carbon footprint.
The company has steadily increased its reliance on rail transport,citing important environmental benefits. Maruti Suzuki estimates that using railways has helped avoid over 180,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions and saved more than 6.3 million liters of fuel. As fiscal year 2014-15, the automaker has dispatched around 2.4 million vehicles via rail.

Hisashi Takeuchi,MD & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited,emphasized the company’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions. “Reducing carbon emissions is a top priority for us,both in our products and in our operations,” Takeuchi said. “Maruti Suzuki was the first company in India to obtain an Automobile-Freight-Train-Operator license, in 2013. As then, we have dispatched nearly 24 lakh vehicles through rail mode. By FY 2030-31,we plan to increase the share of vehicle dispatches through railways to 35%.”
