Nia DaCosta on ‘The Marvels’ and the Importance of a Solid Script
Nia DaCosta,the director of The Marvels,has opened up about her experience working on the Marvel Cinematic Universe film,comparing it to her current project,28 Years Later. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, DaCosta revealed that a key difference between the two experiences was having a “solid script” to work with on 28 Years Later.
DaCosta was heavily involved in the development of The Marvels from an early stage and had initial ideas for the film, including potential time travel elements and the introduction of Adam Warlock. However, despite being credited as a writer alongside megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik, DaCosta felt the film suffered from a lack of a strong script.
“Making the 28 Years Later sequel was one of the best filmmaking experiences I’ve had,” DaCosta said. “One of the issues I had with Candyman and Marvels was the lack of a really solid script,which is always gonna just wreak havoc on the whole process.”
The Marvels,released in November 2023,proved to be the lowest-performing film in the MCU,grossing just $206.1 million worldwide against a production budget of $374 million - a fraction of the $1.13 billion earned by its predecessor, Captain Marvel.
