The story of Marvel Rivals centers on a timestream entanglement triggered by a hostile encounter between Doctor Doom and his heroic counterpart from the year 2099. This event resulted in the creation of new worlds where various heroes and villains must fight to defeat both versions of Doom.

The game has followed a frequent update cycle leading up to the current season. Season 6 began on January 16, 2026, and was followed by Season 6.5 on February 11, 2026, which introduced Elsa Bloodstone to the playable roster.

Beyond the digital game, the intellectual property has expanded into print. Marvel Comics has published or planned three series based on the game: Marvel Rivals, Sai: Dimensional Rivals, and Queen in Black.
