Mary Immaculate College (MICL) are heading to the Fitzgibbon Cup final after a thrilling extra-time victory over DCU Dóchas Éireann. The final score was 0-31 to 2-16, securing their place in the championship game.
The semi-final, played on Wednesday evening, saw a tightly contested match that ultimately required extra time to determine a winner. The initial period ended in a deadlock, with a score of 0-20 to 2-14. DCU substitute Daniel O’Meara managed to score a crucial point in the dying seconds of regulation time, forcing the game into extra time.
However, Mary Immaculate demonstrated dominance in the extra-time period, quickly establishing a five-point lead after the restart. They continued to extend their advantage throughout the second period of extra time, ultimately securing a nine-point victory.
Kilkenny man Shane Walsh played a pivotal role in Mary I’s success, particularly in the second half. He accumulated 0-9 points, with 0-8 coming from placed balls, consistently keeping his side within striking distance. His scoring exploits were described as “remarkable” and were key to maintaining pressure on DCU.
While Walsh’s performance was crucial, the game also saw contributions from other players. Westmeath native Peter Clarke scored a couple of key goals for DCU, one on either side of halftime, putting his team in a strong position for much of the contest. Jimmy Quilty of MICL was also in action during the semi-final match at DCU Sportsground in Glasnevin, Dublin.
The match was a thrilling contest throughout, with DCU appearing poised to win for extended periods. Mary I, however, remained resilient, staying within touching distance and ultimately capitalizing in extra time. The victory marks a significant achievement for Mary Immaculate College, booking their spot in the Fitzgibbon Cup final.
This win comes after Mary I previously defeated UCD in an extra-time thriller, demonstrating their ability to perform under pressure in close matches. The 2024 Fitzgibbon Cup champions, Mary Immaculate College, have proven their mettle once again, overcoming a strong DCU side to advance in the competition.
The game was broadcast live, allowing fans to follow the action as it unfolded. The semi-final took place at the DCU Sportsgrounds, with a 6pm throw-in.
Mary I will now face University of Limerick (UL) in the final. UL previously had a 22-game unbeaten run, but Mary I defied their underdog status to deny UL a three-in-a-row in this enthralling Fitzgibbon Cup Final.
