Maryland Cycling Classic: A historic Baltimore Course promises Thrills and Challenges
Table of Contents
The Maryland Cycling Classic is set to return, promising a captivating display of professional cycling on a technically demanding urban circuit that winds through the historic heart of Baltimore. Race Director Jim Birrell of Medalist Sports, instrumental in crafting this unique course, shared his insights into the meticulous design process.
Balancing Urban Dynamics with Racing Demands
“Creating a race route through a metropolitan area such as Baltimore is a challenge,” Birrell stated. “The most important thing we kept in mind were the people who live and work there. We had to balance the needs for a dynamic route for the cyclists with the least amount of interruption for the inhabitants. it’s a delicate dance – we want challenging technical sectors and climbs that will create exciting racing, but we also need to respect the daily rhythms of the neighborhoods we’re passing through.”
A Cobblestone Spectacle at Fells Point
The race kicks off at Harbor Point Central Plaza, immediately presenting riders with a distinctive 500-meter cobblestone segment along the historic Thames Street in the Fells Point area, a feature that will be tackled on each lap. This iconic stretch is anticipated to be a prime viewing spot for spectators and a strategic location for decisive race-winning moves in the closing laps.
Following the Fells Point challenge, the route continues on a largely flat trajectory around Patterson Park and through the designated feed zone before re-entering the city’s core. Riders will then pass the nation’s oldest Washington Monument, which includes another short, yet impactful, uphill cobblestone section.
The course then ventures out of the city along Falls Road, leading to the highest point of the circuit and the King of the Mountain (KOM) sprint on Northern Parkway. KOM/QOM points will be awarded here on every lap, offering another excellent vantage point for spectators. While not excessively long or steep, this climb is poised to serve as a launchpad for riders aiming for a solo victory or a decisive small-group finish.
The return leg to the Inner Harbor is characterized by its speed and a degree of technicality, culminating in a swing onto the familiar long straightaway that leads to the finish line at E. Pratt and Market St. sprint points will be contested here after the first lap for both men’s and women’s categories.
A Fusion of History and Athleticism
Reflecting on the course’s distinctiveness, Birrell elaborated, “it weaves together Baltimore’s incredible past tapestry with legitimate racing challenges. We’ve got authentic 18th-century cobblestones, punchy climbs through historic neighborhoods, and a King of the Mountain stage at one of America’s most significant religious sites. The circuit creates multiple opportunities for attacks while showcasing centuries of American history. When you finish at the Inner Harbor waterfront, both riders and spectators have experienced something that’s authentically Baltimore and genuinely challenging.”
Festivities and Fan Engagement
the excitement will commence on Friday, September 5th, with the Opening Ceremony and Team Introductions, followed by a public concert from 5 PM to 9 PM at Harbor Point Central Plaza. Fifteen elite women’s and fifteen elite men’s teams from across the globe will be presented on stage, offering a prime prospect for fans to capture photographs and perhaps secure autographs from world-class cyclists.
The chance to witness professional cycling of this caliber is a rare occurrence in the USA. Spectators are encouraged to arrive early on Saturday, september 6th, for the Maryland Cycling Classic to immerse themselves in a full day of thrilling action. strategically placed “fan zones” will be established at the start, the cobbled section, the feed zone, the KOM/QOM sprint line, and the finish line, complete with large screen televisions, ensuring that no matter where you are, you won’t miss a moment of the excitement.
