Maryland Cycling Classic: Dujardin Wins Breakaway Sprint
Sandy Dujardin‘s Patience Pays Off with Maryland cycling Classic Victory
Baltimore, MD - In a thrilling display of tactical racing and raw sprinting power, Sandy Dujardin of Team TotalEnergies emerged victorious at the Maryland Cycling Classic. The Frenchman’s win was a testament to his patience and the strength of his team, as he navigated a challenging race that culminated in a nail-biting sprint finish.
Dujardin was part of a breakaway that defined much of the race, a group that eventually whittled down to just seven riders in the final lap. Among those vying for the win were Jonas Abrahamsen (uno-X Mobility), Marius Mayrhofer (Tudor Pro Cycling), Mauro Schmid (Team Jayco AlUla), Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), Larry Warbasse (Tudor Pro Cycling), and Anders Halland Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility).
The final kilometers were a flurry of attacks and counter-attacks. Warbasse launched an initial attack, but couldn’t sustain the gap. Johannessen then surged to the front, driving the pace into the final kilometer. Warbasse, digging deep for his teammate Mayrhofer, then took over, setting the stage for a dramatic sprint.
Johannessen initiated the sprint, with Abrahamsen glued to his wheel. But Dujardin, who had conserved his energy throughout the long, 800-meter straightaway, unleashed a powerful surge, overtaking his rivals to claim the victory. Abrahamsen finished second, with Mayrhofer rounding out the podium.
“I’m really happy to win here,” an emotional Dujardin said after the race.”I had a good feeling and a strong team. It’s crazy for me, but I am super happy.”
While second place wasn’t the ultimate prize, it was a notable result for Abrahamsen and Uno-X Mobility, as they continue their pursuit of WorldTour promotion next season. The points earned in the Maryland Cycling Classic will be crucial in their quest.Dujardin’s victory in Baltimore is a moment he will undoubtedly cherish, a testament to his skill, determination, and the unwavering support of his Team TotalEnergies.
