Masahiro Nakai Faces Backlash After Sexual Assault Allegations, Shows Suspended
japanese Variety Show Star Faces Backlash After Sexual assault Allegations
Tokyo, Japan – Popular Japanese entertainer Masahiro nakai is facing a career crisis after allegations of sexual assault surfaced last month. The scandal has led to the suspension of his radio and television programs, and he may be forced to pay millions in damages to sponsors.
Nakai, known for his role in the iconic boy band SMAP and his hosting duties on numerous variety shows, was accused of assaulting a woman in her 20s who worked for fuji TV in June 2023. He reportedly settled the case out of court for 90 million yen (approximately $650,000).
The allegations have sent shockwaves through the Japanese entertainment industry. Nippon Broadcasting Corporation, which airs Nakai’s radio program “On and on,” announced the show’s postponement indefinitely. “In view of the relevant reports and extensive rulings on the matter, it has been decided to suspend the show,” said President Maki Hihara.
Nakai’s endorsement deals are also crumbling. SoftBank, a major telecommunications company, has pulled its television commercials featuring Nakai, and a part-time matchmaking platform, Timee, has removed ads featuring him from its YouTube channel.
Fuji TV, which airs several programs hosted by nakai, including “Who To Nakai,” has suspended broadcasts indefinitely. “It was affected by the reports regarding Nakai and the results were widely judged,” the network said in a statement.
Nippon Television (NTV) also edited Nakai out of a New Year’s special program, citing the need to address public concerns.
Legal experts predict that Nakai could face notable financial repercussions. “what Zhongju Zhengguang is most worried about now is that sponsors will demand huge compensation,” said a legal director of a large advertising agency. “If consumers have a negative impression of Zhongju in the future, it will be arduous for them to advertise again.”
The scandal highlights the growing scrutiny of celebrities in Japan and the potential consequences of misconduct. As Nakai navigates this crisis, his future in the entertainment industry remains uncertain.
Japanese Variety Show Star in Hot Water: A Conversation
Ava: Hey Kenji, did you hear about what’s happening with Masahiro Nakai?
Kenji: Nakai? The guy from SMAP? No,what’s going on?
Ava: It’s pretty serious. There are allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman who worked at Fuji TV.
Kenji: Wow, really? I had no idea. When did this happen?
Ava: Apparently it was back in June, but it just came out recently. The woman settled with him out of court for a huge sum – 90 million yen!
Kenji: ninety million yen? That’s like $650,000! That’s insane. What’s happening with his career now?
Ava: It’s a complete mess. His radio show, “On and on,” has been postponed indefinitely. And Fuji TV, where he hosts a bunch of shows, has suspended them all too.
Kenji: I guess that makes sense. Nobody wants to be associated with someone facing such serious allegations.
Ava: Exactly. Even his sponsors are dropping him.SoftBank pulled their commercials, and even a matchmaking service he was endorsing removed ads featuring him.
Kenji: He must be losing millions.I wonder if he’ll be able to bounce back from this.
Ava: It’s really hard to say. There are legal experts who predict he’ll face even more financial losses due to contract cancellations. And with so much public backlash, it’s uncertain if companies will ever want to work with him again.
Kenji: This whole thing is so sad. It’s a reminder that no one is above the law, no matter how famous they are.
