Mass Graves Discovered in Syria After Assad’s Ouster
Grisly Finding: Unidentified Bodies Found in Damascus Warehouse
Damascus, Syria – In a chilling discovery, the Syrian Civil Defense, also known as the White Helmets, uncovered the remains of multiple unidentified individuals in a warehouse on the outskirts of Damascus. The grim find comes just ten days after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
The warehouse, located a mere 50 meters from the revered Sayyida Zeinab shrine, was reportedly filled with boxes of medicine. “We received reports of bodies, bones, and a foul odor emanating from the location,” stated Ammar al-Salmo, a White Helmets official.
The area surrounding the Sayyida zeinab shrine in southern Damascus served as a stronghold for pro-Iranian fighters, including the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, before rebel forces captured the capital on December 8th.
Al-Salmo described a horrifying scene inside the warehouse. “There was a refrigerated room containing decomposing bodies,” he revealed, adding that some of the remains appeared to have been there for over a year and a half.
Scattered human bones were also found on the ground, leading officials to estimate that approximately 20 individuals perished at the site.
Images captured by the White Helmets show volunteers in their signature white helmets carefully removing the bodies and skeletal remains from the warehouse, placing them into black bags and loading them onto trucks.
Al-Salmo noted that some of the bags bore inscriptions including “Aleppo-Hraytan,” referencing a major Syrian city in the north and a nearby location. Numbers were also scribbled on the bags.
“We will determine the age of the victims,” al-Salmo stated. “We have taken samples for DNA testing and will attempt to locate their families.”
This discovery adds to the growing list of mass graves unearthed in Syria as the fall of Assad’s regime. The fate of tens of thousands of detainees and missing persons remains one of the most disturbing legacies of the Syrian conflict, which has claimed over 500,000 lives.
In 2022, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimated that over 100,000 people had perished in Syrian prisons, primarily due to torture, since the war began.
