Mass Protest in Islamabad Results in Deaths of Four Security Personnel
Islamabad Incident: Security Forces Killed in Protest
The government of Pakistan reported that four security personnel died during a mass protest. Supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan flooded into Islamabad demanding his release. The demonstrators approached the center of the capital.
According to Pakistani authorities, demonstrators armed with sticks and slingshots attacked police officers in western Islamabad on Tuesday morning. This area is less than 10 kilometers from the government installation they aimed to occupy.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that the four members of the paramilitary Rangers were killed by “criminals” on a highway leading to the government sector in Islamabad. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that the security personnel were run over by vehicles. He described the situation as extremism rather than peaceful protest.
On Monday, the government reported that one police officer died and nine others were severely injured during clashes over two days as demonstrators neared the capital. Khan, who faced numerous legal challenges, was barred from running in the February elections amid allegations of fraud. He claims these charges are fabricated to prevent his return to politics.
