Massachusetts Leaders Urge Protection of Reproductive and Gender-Affirming Care Amid Trump Administration Concerns

Attorney General Concerns over Reproductive Care Access in Massachusetts

Boston – Attorney General Andrea Campbell expressed her concerns about maintaining access to reproductive and gender-affirming care in Massachusetts. Her remarks came amid discussions about potential threats following Donald Trump’s win.

Campbell’s comments followed Governor Maura Healey’s statements about abortion protections in the state. Healey criticized Trump’s nomination of Matt Gaetz for attorney general, calling for its immediate withdrawal.

Despite a state abortion shield law passed in 2022, Campbell noted the need to review this and other laws to ensure they can withstand legal challenges. She emphasized the importance of continuing to address maternal health disparities, especially among Black communities and those in rural areas.

Governor Healey raised concerns about the impact of the Trump presidency on federal health funding, stating that any withdrawal of support would endanger lives. She assured that Massachusetts’s law guarantees universal health care access.

Campbell warned that the administration’s efforts to improve health care access might be undermined. She highlighted Trump’s AG nominee’s support for a national abortion ban, which could hinder access to critical care for vulnerable populations, including the LGBTQ+ community.

While Trump claims to oppose a federal abortion ban, Campbell stressed the importance of robust state laws to protect patients and providers. Massachusetts was the first state to enact a shield law to safeguard reproductive health services. Campbell affirmed her office’s commitment to strengthening these legal protections.

Advocacy group Reproductive Equity Now voiced concerns regarding Gaetz’s history of opposing abortion protections. The organization fears he may use his position to restrict abortion access nationwide.

Campbell condemned Gaetz’s potential appointment, citing his controversial background and his stance on various issues, including reproductive rights. Healey also criticized the nomination as unserious and highlighted Gaetz’s lack of experience in law enforcement.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to protecting health care access in Massachusetts amidst uncertainty surrounding federal policies.
