144 Million Tons of Sand Discharged: Joint Sediment Discharge Dispatch for Major Reservoirs in the Upper and Middle Reaches of the Yellow River to End in 2024

The Ministry of Water Resources led the Yellow River Water Conservancy Commission to jointly dispatch the Longyangxia and Liujiaxia reservoirs in the upper reaches of the Yellow River from 20:00 on September 5 to shape the flow rate of 1,800 cubic meters per second at Lanzhou station, lasting about 8 days. At the same time, the sand unloading operation of key reservoirs such as Shapotou, Qingtongxia, Haibowan, Wanjiazhai, and Longkou in the upper and middle reaches of the Yellow River was coordinated and coordinated.

The Yellow River Water Conservancy Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources followed the principles of safety, controllability, overall planning, and was supported by joint sediment discharge and multi-year adjustment technology in reservoirs and river channels. Based on the latest conditions of reservoirs and river channels, combined with incoming water forecasts, the organization compiled the “2024 Joint Sediment Discharge Planning Plan for Key Reservoirs in the Upper and Middle Reaches of the Yellow River”.

During this joint sand discharge, the five reservoirs, including Shapotou, Qingtongxia, Haibowan, Wanjiazhai, and Longkou reservoirs, discharged a total of 144 million tons of sand, of which a total of 67.9 million tons of washed sediment in the reservoir area were reduced, the silting effect is significant.
