Welcome to ‘Mastering entrepreneurship in dentistry’. This series will help dental professionals excel as practitioners and entrepreneurs. In today’s world, where healthcare and business overlap, you need to succeed in both areas.
I’m Dr. Jana Denzel. I graduated from the University of Valencia in Spain in 2019 and began my career in the NHS in the UK. Here, I improved my clinical skills and patient care fundamentals. I realized that to stand out in dentistry, I needed to think beyond the dental chair.
I became interested in personal branding. Building a brand based on my vision and values helped me create a unique place in dentistry. The COVID-19 pandemic, while challenging, allowed me to connect with global dental leaders and launch a digital marketing company servicing clinics and dental organizations across the UK.
‘Quality over quantity’

At the same time, I developed an AI algorithm for detecting issues in dental x-rays. In 2021, I received the Best Young Dentist London award at the Dentistry Awards. Since then, I have been featured in Vogue and Grazia, and I work on Harley Street. There, I have enhanced the smiles of influential figures, including Grammy-winners and top CEOs.
With Denstudio, I turned my vision for high-end, personalized dental care into reality. I also joined the clinical entrepreneurial NHS program and lectured in Europe and the Middle East, including at Oxford University. As a global ambassador for Slow Dentistry, I advocate thoughtful patient care, prioritizing quality over quantity. I was recently awarded Best Young Aesthetic Dentist South at the Clinical Dentistry Awards.
Selling versus service
Over half of UK dentists are self-employed. Therefore, understanding business aspects is essential.
Let’s discuss ‘selling versus service’. In healthcare, selling feels uncomfortable; it can imply pressuring patients into unnecessary treatments. However, reframing selling as providing a service helps. Focus on serving the patient. Prioritize their experience and offer true solutions instead of fixating on income.
Additional services
How can you make each appointment more valuable? Suggest necessary treatments or additional services to enhance patient well-being. For example, when my barber recommended a deep conditioning treatment for my dry hair, I accepted it because it made sense. He informed me as an expert; I appreciated his advice.
The same applies to dentistry. If a patient comes in for a cleaning and has yellow teeth, suggesting a whitening treatment is a service, not a sale. After removing plaque, it’s an ideal time to whiten. Why not offer it?
Improve patient outcomes
By focusing on adding value and improving outcomes, you create a win-win situation. This mindset enhances the patient experience and supports your business success. Consider how to add value to your appointments. How can you serve your patients better today?
‘Mastering entrepreneurship in dentistry’ aims to improve patient service. This series is for all professionals, from new graduates to experienced clinic owners. Each month, we will discuss crucial topics like branding, sales, negotiation, building resilience, and dealing with setbacks. My goal is to inspire you to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset for a successful and sustainable career.
