Mastodon Jaw Discovered in New York Backyard
Backyard Finding Unearths Rare Mastodon Jaw in Upstate New York
Scotchtown, NY – A routine gardening session turned into a paleontological windfall for one upstate New York resident who stumbled upon a remarkably well-preserved mastodon jaw in his backyard.Teh discovery, made in late September near Scotchtown, a hamlet about 70 miles northwest of New York City, has sent ripples of excitement through the scientific community.
The homeowner, who wishes to remain anonymous, initially mistook the massive teeth for baseballs. “He picked them up and realized they were teeth,” said Robert Feranec, director of research and collections and curator of Ice Age animals at the New York State Museum.

“While the jaw is the star of the show, the additional toe and rib fragments offer valuable context and the potential for additional research,” said Cory Harris, chair of SUNY Orange’s behavioral sciences department. “We are also hoping to further explore the immediate area to see if there are any additional bones that were preserved.”
This remarkable find marks the first complete mastodon jaw discovered in New York in over a decade. The state has yielded over 150 mastodon fossils to date, with a meaningful concentration found in Orange County, where this latest discovery was made.
“This newly unearthed jaw provides a unique chance to study the ecology of this grand species, which will enhance our understanding of the Ice Age ecosystems from this region,” said Feranec.
Scientists will carbon-date the fossils and analyze them to determine the mastodon’s age, diet, and habitat. The public will have the chance to see these prehistoric treasures on display at the New York State Museum sometime in 2025.
From Garden to Museum: Interview wiht Experts on Backyard Mastodon Discovery
NewsDirectory3: We are thrilled to be joined today by Dr. Robert Feranec, Director of Research adn Collections at the New York State Museum, to discuss the recent remarkable fossil find in Upstate New York. Dr. Feranec, for those unfamiliar with the story, can you shed some light on the initial discovery?
Dr. Feranec: Certainly. This remarkable find came about quite unexpectedly. A homeowner in Scotchtown was simply tending to his garden when he stumbled upon what he initially thought were baseballs. Upon closer inspection, he realized they were gargantuan teeth, leading him to contact our team at the New York State Museum.
NewsDirectory3: That must have been quite a shock! And what did yoru team find when you arrived?

Dr. Feranec: This jaw provides a unique chance to delve deeper into the ecology of mastodons during the Ice Age. We’ll be able to analyze the jawbone and the othre fragments to determine the mastodon’s age, diet, and even its potential habitat.
NewsDirectory3: what are the next steps for this fascinating find? What can the public expect to see?
Dr. Feranec: Our team will meticulously clean, study, and carbon-date the fossils. In 2025, we plan to exhibit these prehistoric treasures at the New York State Museum, allowing the public to witness this incredible piece of history firsthand.
NewsDirectory3: This is truly exciting news for anyone interested in paleontology and Ice Age history.Thank you, Dr. Feranec, for sharing your expertise with us today.
