Matchroom Boxing is expanding its scope beyond conventional fight promotion in a strategic rebrand. With an increasingly saturated boxing content landscape, the company aims to offer more than just main event spectacles. The goal is to connect with new audiences and modernize its image, according to Chief Marketing Officer Ross Garritty.
Garritty said the company wants to engage at the community level and support fighters’ lifestyles, emphasizing that Matchroom seeks to be a comprehensive service in boxing promotion. The rebrand includes tweaks to the look and feel across digital, social, and live events, but is not intended to be a radical departure from the company’s established identity.
While acknowledging that measuring the rebrand’s success will be challenging, Garritty expressed hope that it will catalyze growth and strengthen Matchroom’s ability to reach a broader audience. He added that the company is prepared for potential criticism and plans to counter it with content that reflects matchroom’s relatable and self-deprecating style.
The rebranding initiative, which has been underway for 12 months, stems from a candid assessment of the company’s existing image. “ultimately,if we’re being honest with ourselves the Matchroom logo is just not that cool,” Garritty said.
The new brand messaging will emphasize the idea that Matchroom works with ordinary people who have remarkable talent, a sentiment once shared by Barry Hearn. This narrative will be central to the company’s promotional efforts, highlighting the personalities and stories that drive the sport.
“Barry Hearn once said to me, years and years ago, ‘All we really do is work with ordinary people who have extraordinary talent’. And I always felt that was a really punchy line and it says neatly what we do. It also humbles us and heroes our talent because without them we aren’t anything.”
What’s next
Fans can expect to see the new Matchroom Boxing brand rolling out across various platforms, with a focus on fine-tuning the existing strengths of the company while adopting a more contemporary approach to engage a wider audience in the boxing world.
