The Minnesota Wild will be without their veteran playmaker Mats Zuccarello for the third consecutive game as they face the Dallas Stars in Game 4 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series.
Zuccarello has been sidelined since suffering an elbow to the head from Stars defenseman Tyler Myers in the first period of Game 1. Although he remained in that contest and recorded three assists, he did not feel well afterward and has not participated with the team since.
The injury has significantly impacted the Wild’s offensive output, particularly on the power play. Without Zuccarello, Minnesota’s top unit went scoreless on 11 man-advantage opportunities across Games 2 and 3. The team’s only power-play goal in Game 3 came from Marcus Johansson on the second unit.
Zuccarello’s absence has also affected his longtime linemate Kirill Kaprizov, who has failed to score in the two games Zuccarello has missed. Kaprizov recorded just one assist in those contests.
To fill the void, the Wild have inserted Bobby Brink into the top line alongside Kaprizov and Ryan Hartman. Brink saw increased responsibility in Game 2, logging five hits in 12:27 of ice time while playing in Zuccarello’s usual spot.
Head coach John Hynes indicated that Zuccarello’s availability remains uncertain, stating he would assess the player’s condition during the morning skate before making a decision. As of the latest updates, Zuccarello has not taken part in any team practices or warmups since Game 1.
Zuccarello, who is in the final year of his contract with the Wild, is the highest-scoring Norwegian in NHL history. He ranks fourth in franchise history with 271 assists and sixth with 389 points. During the regular season, he tallied 54 points (15 goals, 39 assists) in 59 games.
The Wild currently trail the series 2-1, with Game 4 scheduled to take place in St. Paul, Minnesota. A win would even the series, while a loss would put Minnesota facing elimination in a best-of-seven format.
