Matt Reeves, the director behind “The Batman,” is set to helm an eight-episode Apple TV+ adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s 1987 novel, “The Bonfire of the Vanities.” The project reunites Reeves with Apple TV+, as he prepares to begin production on “The Batman – Part II” in London later this month.
David E. Kelley, known for creating “Boston Legal” and “Big Little Lies,” will write and executive produce the series. Kelley has an existing relationship with Apple TV+, having previously developed “Presumed Innocent” and the upcoming “Margo’s Got Money Troubles.”
A Satire of 1980s New York
“The Bonfire of the Vanities” is a sprawling drama that dissects ambition, racism, social class, politics, and greed within 1980s New York City. The story centers on a diverse cast of characters, but primarily follows Sherman McCoy, a Wall Street bond trader whose privileged life unravels following a hit-and-run incident in the Bronx.
The incident occurs while McCoy’s mistress is driving, and involves striking a young Black man. This event sets off a chain reaction, exposing the city’s racial tensions and the complexities of its social and legal systems.
Previous Adaptation and Challenges
The novel was previously adapted into a 1990 film starring Tom Hanks, Melanie Griffith, Bruce Willis, and Kim Cattrall. However, the film was widely considered a critical and commercial failure. The adaptation was criticized for stripping away the novel’s satirical edge and for miscasting its leads.

According to reports, studio interference also played a significant role in the film’s shortcomings. The limited series format is expected to provide more room to explore the novel’s intricate themes and characters without the constraints of a two-hour runtime.
Reeves’ Vision and Production Details
Matt Reeves’ involvement is seen as a positive sign, as he is known for his strong directorial vision and ability to create atmospheric and tonally dark storytelling. His work on “The Batman” demonstrates his skill in framing shots and controlling tone, qualities that could be crucial in adapting Wolfe’s cynical narrative.
Reeves will executive produce the series through his production company, 6th and Idaho Productions. Sarah Geismer and Matthew Tinker will also serve as executive producers. The series will be produced by Warner Bros. Television.
Kelley’s Track Record with Wolfe’s Work
This isn’t Kelley’s first foray into adapting Tom Wolfe’s work. He previously served as the creator and showrunner of the Netflix adaptation of Wolfe’s “A Man In Full,” which starred Jeff Daniels and Diane Lane. This experience likely informed his approach to “The Bonfire of the Vanities.”
Kelley’s success with Apple TV+’s “Presumed Innocent” and the upcoming “Margo’s Got Money Troubles” further solidify his relationship with the streaming platform and suggest a strong creative partnership.
Release Timeline
Given Reeves’ commitment to “The Batman – Part II,” which begins filming on May 29 in London, the Apple TV+ series is not expected to enter production immediately. A release date has not yet been announced.
The project represents a renewed effort to bring Wolfe’s complex and controversial novel to the screen, hoping to capture the nuance and social commentary that were lost in the 1990 film adaptation.
