Matt Utai Shooting: NRL Star Seriously Injured in Sydney Drive-By

Former New Zealand rugby league international Matt Utai is in a serious condition after being shot in the upper shoulder and leg in a drive-by shooting in Sydney’s southwest on Tuesday morning. The 44-year-old underwent surgery following the incident, which police are treating as a targeted attack.

Emergency services were called to Macquarie Street in Greenacre around 6:00 AM local time after reports of multiple gunshots fired from an SUV, which subsequently fled the scene. Utai was reportedly shot while getting into his car to go to work.

Superintendent Rod Hart of Bankstown Police Area Command described the shooting as a “brazen ambush,” adding that the victim was found on the front lawn in “quite a bit of pain.” “We believe, at this point in time, that it’s definitely a targeted attack. There is no ongoing threat to the community,” Hart stated.

Police located a vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting on fire a short time later on Samuel Street in Wiley Park. The vehicle was seized for forensic examination. Detectives have established crime scenes at both locations and are investigating the incidents as linked.

While authorities have not publicly identified Utai by name, multiple Australian media outlets have reported his identity. Superintendent Hart confirmed the victim was a 44-year-old male with a limited criminal record, consisting of traffic violations. “At this stage, we do believe that he may not be involved in any criminal activity,” Hart said. “But, as part of this investigation and this strike force, investigators will look at who he is involved in, who his family may be involved in, and any links there may be to organised crime.”

The investigation has taken a turn towards potential gang connections, with reports suggesting Utai’s son, Iziah Utai, is associated with the Alameddine crime family, a group currently embroiled in an internal feud that has led to a series of shootings across Sydney in the past year. Police are exploring any potential links between the shooting and this ongoing conflict.

Utai enjoyed a distinguished rugby league career, playing 127 NRL games for the Canterbury Bulldogs and 40 for the Wests Tigers between 2002, and 2013. He was a member of the Bulldogs team that won the NRL premiership in 2004. He represented New Zealand with the Kiwis on four occasions between 2002 and 2005, all matches against Australia, and also earned three caps for Samoa.

Born in Auckland, Utai moved to Australia to pursue his professional rugby league ambitions. He was known for his powerful running and defensive capabilities, becoming a fan favorite for both the Bulldogs and the Tigers. His retirement in 2013 marked the end of a career defined by dedication and skill.

The shooting has sent shockwaves through the rugby league community. While the motive remains under investigation, the fact that police are treating the incident as targeted raises serious concerns. The investigation is being led by the Raptor Squad, New South Wales Police’s specialist unit focused on combating organized crime and bikie gangs.
