Matthew Brennan Slams Cycling Safety Failures After Fin Tarling Death

Professional cyclist Matthew Brennan has criticized the sport’s governing bodies, calling it disgraceful that safety measures have failed to change following the death of 19-year-old Fin Tarling last month, according to BBC Sport.

Tarling died on 14 August during the Volta a Portugal after a high-speed collision with a van that had strayed onto a closed road. His funeral took place in Aberystwyth on Thursday. Brennan, a 21-year-old rider for the Dutch team Visma-Lease a Bike, told BBC Sport that the lack of institutional response to the tragedy feels unacceptable as the sport continues to operate with vehicles on active courses.

It is very sad what happened with Fin, Brennan told BBC Sport. We were watching his funeral yesterday and I said to my friend: It is so sad we have lost someone so special and also nothing has changed. I really think that is disgraceful. Rather than anyone within these management bodies declaring that this must never happen again, it appears the industry has simply moved on without change, leaving instances where automobiles are still present on the racing route.

Safety Record and Independent Oversight

Six riders have died during road races over the past three years. Additionally, American rider Ezra Caudell remains hospitalized with multi-system trauma following a crash at the Philadelphia Cycling Classic, as reported by BBC Sport.

Brennan, who recently won five stages at the Vuelta a Espana and captured the one-day classic Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, argues that the sport needs an independent body to enforce strict safety requirements.

I think these big organisations and the UCI should have a look at what they need to do to increase the safety, Brennan told BBC Sport. Speaking from my own perspective, an independent body ought to oversee the UCI and all associated groups, enforcing rigorous regulations to ensure competitor protection remains the foremost priority.

BBC Sport reported that the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has been contacted for comment. Earlier this month, the UCI proposed introducing GPS trackers across all races to track rider locations continuously.

Contrasting Race Scales and External Pressures

While cycling’s premier three-week events, such as the Tour de France, generally maintain strong safety records through extensive measures like full daytime road closures, smaller races often rely on rolling roadblocks. Events such as the third-tier Volta a Portugal and the Tour of Britain utilize police and officials traveling in front of and behind the peloton, a more cost-effective management strategy tied to lower broadcast rights fees.

Brennan also points to external pressures, such as television scheduling and extreme weather, as growing safety concerns. During the Vuelta a Espana, he voiced criticism about racing in 44-degree Celsius heat.

We have big outside factors such as TV, Brennan told BBC Sport. I would say that is a massive one. The scenarios involving competition in Spain, where the start time is not shifted to 09:00 and instead takes place at 15:00 during the peak heat of the day.
