Los Angeles, CA – The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) recently concluded its convention, a pivotal gathering that saw delegates address a wide array of critical issues facing entertainment workers across North America. The union, representing over 170,000 technicians, artisans, and craftspersons, reaffirmed its commitment to worker-friendly policies, diversity and inclusion, and navigating the evolving landscape of the entertainment industry.

Key Resolutions and Policy Advancements

The convention saw the passage of numerous resolutions aimed at strengthening the union’s advocacy and support for its members. Among the key outcomes were:

Federal Film and Television Incentive: A unanimous vote in favor of advocating for a federal film and television incentive program, a move expected to bolster production and job opportunities across the United States.
Support for Canadian Members: The union pledged support for its Canadian members amidst ongoing U.S.-Canada trade conflicts, underscoring a commitment to solidarity across borders.
AI and Machine Learning Mitigation: Resolutions were passed to advocate for protections and training to address the potential impacts of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning on entertainment workers, ensuring that technological advancements benefit, rather than displace, the workforce.
Anti-Discrimination and Diversity: A strong stance was taken against discrimination, with a renewed commitment to increasing protections for the diverse workforce within the entertainment industry. PRO Act Advocacy: The union reaffirmed its support for pro-union federal legislation, specifically highlighting the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act.
Production Accountant Unionization: A pledge of support was made for the unionization of the Production Accountant craft within the Motion Picture and Television Production Industry, recognizing the growing need for collective bargaining in this specialized field.

Modernizing Governance and Embracing New Crafts

In a notable move towards modernization, the IATSE implemented constitutional updates designed to reflect contemporary language and governance structures. A notable addition was the establishment of a new membership designation for Visual Effects (VFX) workers. This recognition comes at a crucial time, as VFX workers have recently secured their first contracts with major studios like Marvel, Disney, and Avatar. Their presence at this convention marked a historic first, signaling the union’s expanding reach and commitment to representing all facets of the entertainment production process.

A Convention Rooted in Respect and High Participation

The IATSE Convention commenced with an opening acknowledgment by International Trustee Tuia’ana Scanlan, who recognized HawaiĘ»i as an indigenous space, honoring the deep connection of its descendants to the Land, Sea, and Sky. This act of respect set a tone of cultural awareness for the proceedings.

The governance body saw unprecedented participation, with 982 elected delegates representing the highest turnout in the union’s history. These delegates, comprised of IATSE rank-and-file activists and local union leaders, returned to their respective jurisdictions energized and committed to driving meaningful change for their entertainment colleagues.

Continued Growth and Future Outlook

Since President Loeb’s initial election in 2008, the IATSE has experienced considerable growth in membership, enhanced workplace protections, and advanced the interests of entertainment workers throughout North America. Following his reelection, President Loeb expressed his honour and humility in continuing this vital work. “Let’s seize this momentum, lock arms and get ready for the fights of the future,” he stated, emphasizing the union’s readiness to tackle upcoming challenges. The convention also featured addresses from a distinguished slate of guest speakers, including Hawaii Governor Josh Green, M.D., Congresswoman Jill Tokuda (D-Hawaii), AFL-CIO president Liz Shuler, International Brotherhood of Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien, American Federation of Musicians (AFM) President Tino Gagliardi, and Johannes studinger, Head of UNI Media & Entertainment, among others. their insights further enriched the discussions and reinforced the collaborative spirit driving the union forward.
