Matthews Returns: Maple Leafs Face Lightning in Thrilling Matchup
Auston Matthews has returned to the Toronto Maple Leafs for their game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. He last played on November 3 due to an upper-body injury and missed nine games. Matthews skated alone after returning from Germany on November 22, where he consulted a doctor.
During practice on Friday, Matthews centered a line with Matthew Knies and William Nylander. Matthews expressed excitement about his return, acknowledging he might have some rust but feels ready to play again. He has 11 points, including five goals and six assists, in 13 games this season.
Nylander praised Matthews, noting their chemistry and the benefit of having the league’s best goal scorer back on the ice. The Maple Leafs have performed well without Matthews, winning seven out of nine games. They currently lead the Atlantic Division, just ahead of the Florida Panthers.
Last season, Matthews scored a career-high 69 goals, and he has scored at least 40 goals in each of the past five seasons. Since joining the NHL in 2016-17, he leads the league with 373 goals, far ahead of Alex Ovechkin in second place.
Matthews shared that watching from the sidelines was difficult, but he is proud of how his teammates have played. He looks forward to ending the current road trip on a positive note.
