Previous Rescue Attempt Fails
This isn’t the first time Matratzen Direct has faced insolvency. The company previously filed for bankruptcy in 2017 but was rescued. Though, that restructuring involved closing nearly 80 stores. further financial difficulties emerged, with the company reporting an uncovered loss exceeding €29 million as of December 31, 2023, according to the WirtschaftsWoche.
The current economic downturn and reduced consumer spending contributed to the company’s inability to recover.
A Long History Comes to an End
The company has a long history, originating in 1929 in Ossendorf, a district of Cologne, as Bettina Federkernwerk, later becoming Bettina Matratzenfabrik GmbH.
Liquidation Sale Underway
Matratzen Direct will begin liquidating its inventory through its MFO stores before the end of the year. The stores and online shop will remain open for now, but the slogan “MFO Matratzen – günstig besser schlafen” (“MFO Mattresses – sleep better for less”) will soon be a thing of the past.
