Mauritania on the Brink: 5 Critical Challenges Facing the Nation, According to the Prime Minister
Mauritania’s Prime Minister Outlines Major Challenges Facing the Government
Mauritania’s Prime Minister, Mokhtar Ould Ajay, has highlighted the significant challenges facing the government as it strives to achieve its development goals.
Establishment of State Institutions and Governance
The Prime Minister emphasized that the first challenge relates to the degree of establishment of state institutions and governance, citing the slow pace of modernization in Mauritania and the circumstances surrounding it.
He noted that this challenge is embodied in the ease of trespassing on public funds, negligence in maintaining public institutions and infrastructure, and the weakness of local governance.
Structural Weakness of the National Economy
The second challenge, according to the Prime Minister, is the structural weakness of the national economy, which has not reached a level that allows for real economic growth since independence.
He attributed this to the lack of diversification of sources of growth, the weakness of infrastructure supporting the economy, and the lack of promotion of sectors with favorable advantages.
Readiness of Human Resources
The Prime Minister criticized a mentality that “does not glorify the value of work and does not value professions,” leading to the disruption of energy and creative abilities.
He also referred to the lack of access to education, low levels of education, and the weakness of vocational training.
Strengthening Social Unity and Harmony
The Prime Minister emphasized that outdated mindsets and stereotypes weaken social unity and harmony, leading to a strengthening of economic and social gaps.
Security and Geopolitical Challenges
The Prime Minister explained that globalization, violence, terrorism, and destructive wars in the region affect the country’s stability.
He added that the security strategy adopted by Mauritania has contributed to preserving the country’s stability, but the danger still exists, requiring more vigilance and sacrifice.
