Living in the Moment: Max Cavalera Reflects on Four Decades of Metal
Max Cavalera, the iconic frontman of SOULFLY and CAVALERA, and former vocalist/guitarist of SEPULTURA, has always been known for his raw energy and intense stage presence. In a recent interview with the “Everblack” podcast, Cavalera offered a glimpse into his mindset, revealing a man who lives firmly in the present, embracing both the struggles and triumphs of his four-decade career.
“I don’t really think of life in terms of time that much,” Cavalera shared. “I’m a kind of guy that I live a lot in the moment. I’m not a future guy and I’m not that much of a past guy. I’m more of a present guy, and I like to enjoy the moment that I’m in, whatever that is, and make the best of the situation.”
He recalled the early days of SOULFLY, a period marked by uncertainty and self-doubt. “It was very struggling, complete crazy, a lot of doubt, self-doubt, and ’I don’t know if I can do this under a different name’ and all this shit,” Cavalera admitted. “But I’m a guy that I live in the moment, so the now is what’s happening… And then whatever happens later, whatever — I roll with it.”
Cavalera’s ”live in the moment” beliefs extends to his vast musical catalog. He recently stumbled upon a website documenting every show he’s ever played, a staggering testament to his relentless touring schedule. ”I was fucking blown away, becuase I forgot half of it,” he confessed. “But he had it,and it kind of blew my mind, all the shows.”
This experience sparked an idea: a book chronicling his touring adventures. “I’ve been kind of messing around with this idea for a little bit, but I think I might be able to turn that into a book,” Cavalera revealed. ”I think that would be really cool for me and for the fans.”
Cavalera’s career has been marked by both triumphs and tribulations. His departure from SEPULTURA in 1996, followed by his brother Igor’s exit a decade later, was a tumultuous period. However, the brothers reunited in CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, which later evolved into CAVALERA, revisiting their SEPULTURA roots with re-recorded versions of their early albums, “Morbid Visions,” “Bestial Devastation,” and “Schizophrenia.”
These re-recordings, featuring Travis Stone (PIG DESTROYER) on lead guitars and Igor Amadeus cavalera (GO AHEAD AND DIE, HEALING MAGIC) on bass, offer a fresh take on classic material.
With a career spanning nearly four decades, Max Cavalera continues to push boundaries and embrace the present moment. His unwavering passion for music and his ability to connect with fans on a personal level ensure that his legacy will continue to resonate for years to come.
