Max Holloway Mural Unveiled in Moiliili: A Tribute by Artist Tehrell Porter
Athletes in Moiliili gain inspiration from a 12-foot portrait of Max Holloway. This artwork is located at Tactical Strength and Conditioning, a gym where Holloway trains. Honolulu street artist Tehrell Porter created the mural in 20 hours. He originally contacted various gyms to display his work, but Tactical Strength was the only one that responded.
The mural celebrates Holloway’s victory after he knocked out Justin Gaethje for the UFC BMF title in April. Porter faced challenges in painting Holloway’s tattoos, which tested his skills. Known for his hyper-realistic murals, Porter has also created works featuring NBA stars like Kobe Bryant. Seven of these murals are on Oahu.
Porter has expanded his portfolio to include other notable figures, such as Bill Walton. His latest creation appeared on a backboard during the Maui Invitational, a college basketball tournament Walton commented on. Businesses often commission Porter to create large portraits, including characters from Dragon Ball Z.
What techniques does Tehrell Porter use to achieve hyper-realism in his murals?
interview with Street Artist Tehrell Porter: The Inspiration Behind Max Holloway’s Mural in Moiliili
NewsDirectory3: Thank you for joining us today, Tehrell. Let’s start with your most recent project—the stunning mural of Max Holloway at Tactical Strength and conditioning. What motivated you to create this piece?
Tehrell Porter: Thank you for having me! This mural is a celebration of Max’s unbelievable accomplishment, specifically his knockout victory over Justin Gaethje for the UFC BMF title. Living in Hawaii and being part of the local community, I’ve always admired Max’s dedication and how he inspires athletes and fans alike. When the opportunity arose, I knew I had to capture that moment in a mural.
NewsDirectory3: You painted this mural in just 20 hours. What was that experience like?
Tehrell Porter: It was intense! I was focused and energized, especially knowing it was for someone as influential as Max. However, it wasn’t without its challenges. Painting his tattoos required a lot of precision, which pushed my skills to the limit. But I enjoy a good challenge—it’s what makes the final result that much more rewarding.
NewsDirectory3: How did Tactical Strength come to host your mural?
Tehrell Porter: I actually reached out to several gyms in the area, but Tactical Strength was the only one that responded positively. I really appreciate them for being open to this idea. It’s fantastic to have my work displayed in a place where people come to train and be inspired.
NewsDirectory3: Your style is known for its hyper-realism. What influences your artistic direction?
Tehrell Porter: I’ve always been fascinated by realism in art. During my childhood, my aunt encouraged me to read National Geographic when I struggled academically, which ignited my love for drawing animals and the world around me. This influence continues to shape my work, whether I’m creating realistic animal portraits or large-scale murals of athletes like Kobe Bryant and Bill Walton.
NewsDirectory3: you’ve created several murals around Oahu, including one of Kobe Bryant and a whale at Teapresso. Can you tell us about your process for selecting subjects?
Tehrell Porter: I love highlighting figures that resonate with the community or have made a significant cultural impact. It’s not just about fame; I want to pay tribute to people who inspire others, like athletes and icons. Now, looking to the future, I’m planning to honor Allen Iverson next. I want to capture that iconic moment he had against Tyronn Lue during the 2001 NBA Finals—it’s a scene that speaks volumes in sports history.
NewsDirectory3: With your accomplished portfolio, what’s your ultimate goal as an artist?
Tehrell porter: My ultimate goal is to keep evolving as an artist while being able to give back to the community. Art can inspire, motivate, and bring people together, and I want to use my talent to uplift others. I think my tribute to Max Holloway embodies that spirit—I hope it inspires young athletes in Moiliili and beyond to chase their dreams.
NewsDirectory3: Thank you for sharing your insights,Tehrell.Your work continues to inspire many. We look forward to seeing more from you in the future!
Tehrell Porter: Thank you! I appreciate your support and interest in my work.
Porter developed an interest in art during childhood, partly due to his aunt’s influence. To discourage poor academic performance, she encouraged him to read National Geographic, sparking his love for drawing animals. Today, his art often features animals and large-scale portraits. For instance, you can find his mural of a whale at Teapresso or King Kong at Kua Loa Ranch.
While searching for a site for his next Kobe Bryant mural, Porter plans to honor Allen Iverson next. He aims to depict the famous moment of Iverson stepping over Tyronn Lue during the 2001 NBA Finals. Until then, his favorite mural remains the tribute to Holloway.
