CHICAGO — ‍Paul Skenes​ struggled in the ⁣fifth inning, surrendering three home runs as the Chicago Cubs defeated the​ Pittsburgh Pirates 8-3 on Thursday.

Skenes (3-3), who had⁣ previously shut out the Cubs and held a 2-0‌ lead, gave up solo home‌ runs to⁣ Dansby Swanson, Kyle Tucker, and Seiya Suzuki in the ⁣fifth. He ⁤allowed three runs on five⁣ hits and walked four in five innings, striking out only two.

This marked the ⁣first time since his initial⁢ start⁤ of the season that Skenes failed ​to pitch at‌ least ‍six innings. In his six ⁢starts this‌ season, he had⁣ allowed only one home run in 37 2/3​ innings.This was also the⁢ first time in his ‌career that he‌ has surrendered more than two home runs in a single game.
