The documentary “Maya and the Wave,” which follows Brazilian big wave surfer Maya Gabeira’s decade-long pursuit of conquering massive waves, particularly at Nazaré, Portugal, debuted last month in California and will be released worldwide on June 4.
Directed by Stephanie Johnes, the film delves into Gabeira’s intense relationship with Nazaré, a location that represents both her greatest ambition and a near-fatal challenge. The film portrays Gabeira’s determination to overcome the dangers of big wave surfing and her personal battles.
Gabeira gained prominence as the first female superstar in big wave surfing. Her talent and commitment earned her media attention, and she secured the XXL biggest wave title from 2007 to 2010. The film also explores the individuals who supported her journey and the evolution of her character.
The documentary features Gabeira’s tow partner, Carlos Burlé, and German big wave rider Sebastian Steudtner, who helped her overcome her fears. Her parents also play a role in the film, highlighting their influence on her life and career.
In 2013, Gabeira experienced a severe wipeout at Nazaré while attempting to break the record for the largest wave surfed by a woman. She lost consciousness and required CPR. The incident resulted in a broken fibula and a herniated disk.
“When I was a little girl I wrote in my dairy that I wanted to surf the biggest waves in the world,” Gabeira said.
Despite the setback, Gabeira returned to Nazaré and continued to push the boundaries of female big-wave surfing. On Jan. 18, 2018, she surfed a 68-foot wave at Nazaré, earning her a Guinness world Record. Then,on Feb. 11, 2020, she rode a 73-foot wave, marking the largest wave surfed by anyone that winter season.
