ABANO TERME, Italy (AP) — A newsstand in Abano Terme, near Padua, was the target of a break-in late Saturday, April 12, with thieves making off with an unusual haul: packages of collectible stickers.
Smash and Grab for Stickers
The incident occurred at the newsstand on Via Diaz. According to reports, the perpetrators shattered the glass entrance, likely using a hammer, in an attempt to gain entry. Finding no cash, they instead grabbed what they could: assorted packs of stickers.
Newsstand Owner Speaks Out
Antonella Fasolo, who has operated the newsstand for more then 20 years, discovered the damage Sunday morning. The cost to replace the shattered door is estimated at 1,000 euros.
“In the days before, I didn’t notice anything suspicious, even though there were signs of a screwdriver on the lock one morning,” Fasolo said. “They probably tried to see if they could open the door, but I never expected them to break the glass.I don’t no what they thought they would find in a newsstand – maybe money or something valuable.”
Fasolo added, “When they realized there was nothing engaging, they were satisfied with taking away the packages of stickers: Pokemon, Panini players, Masha & Bear. I still don’t know how many they took because they took away the closed packages. Who knows what they will do with them?”
Community Support
Fasolo expressed her disappointment, noting the challenges of running a newsstand in an era when many are closing. Customers offered their support Sunday upon hearing of the break-in.
“With all the sacrifices needed to do this job, this was the only thing missing,” Fasolo said. She explained that the reinforced glass did not shatter fully but was torn from the door frame. An iron panel now covers the entrance while a new door is ordered.
Examination underway
The newsstand itself lacks security cameras, but authorities are hoping that surveillance footage from nearby businesses may have captured the suspects.
