MAYENNE, france (AP) — Psychiatry in Mayenne is facing a critical shortage, with fewer than one psychiatrist for every 10,000 residents, according to figures from the order of doctors. Dr. Michael Sikorav, a psychiatrist practicing in the Laval area, is attempting to address this gap by seeing approximately 200 patients weekly with the assistance of his medical aide.
A Different Approach to Psychiatric Care
Dr. Sikorav, 35, is known for his unconventional approach. Eschewing the customary white coat, his tattooed arms are often visible. After studying in Poitiers and attending boarding school in Angers, he took a position at the Laval psychiatric hospital. Finding himself at odds with the institution’s patient care policies, he left in 2022 to establish his own practice in Laval.
His primary goal is to provide timely and effective care to as many patients as possible. “Ther are patients honestly, I would tell them listen to we will take our time, you will see a psychologist, we will wait a bit, you can be going to the hospital to ask anything before doing anything, but the emergencies are full or closed, there is a psychiatric clinic next to it which has trouble recruiting psychiatrists too, it is the apocalypse,” Sikorav said. “Modifies things a little, I see 80% of the patients in the department, it is indeed the figures of the ARS (regional health agency) so we are forced to accelerate things a little, as or else there are dramas, clearly there are dramas. The imagination of people, the objectives of a psychiatrist must be revised, we can no longer speak with people for an hour, it is no longer possible.”
Demand Overwhelms Resources
The shortage of mental health professionals in Mayenne is placing immense pressure on existing services.Dr. Sikorav sees patients every 15 minutes, five days a week, primarily focusing on medication management for individuals with conditions such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and severe depression. In the three years since opening his practice, he estimates he has treated 3,100 individuals.
