Mayo Clinic Workers Approve Contract with Wage Hikes, Strike Option
Updated June 10, 2025
Rochester, Minn. — About 700 union workers at Mayo Clinic Hospital Methodist Campus have ratified a new three-year labor agreement. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Healthcare Minnesota & Iowa members, including patient care assistants and surgical technologists, approved the contract June 6.
The new contract addresses key concerns for the healthcare workers. Hallie Wallace, the union representative, highlighted that the agreement provides wage increases, caps on mandatory overtime, and improved shift differentials for surgical technologists. The approved contract also streamlines the grievance procedure language.
Wage increases are a notable component of the agreement. Most members will see a 6.5% increase this year, followed by 4% in 2026 and 3% in 2027. Some will see increases between 4.5% and 17.5% for 2025, with retroactive pay to Feb. 1, 2025. The contract also includes increased uniform and shoe allowances.
A major change is the removal of the “no strike” agreement. “The bargaining unit at Methodist will not be signing a supplemental agreement that bans striking for a full year after the expiration of the contract,” wallace said. “Mayo Methodist members will be able to strike at the end of this new contract for the first time in 70 years.”
The SEIU members at Mayo Clinic Hospital St.Marys Campus will negotiate their next contract in 2027.They voted in 2024 for the right to strike in future contract negotiations. Wallace noted that the new agreement ensures Methodist members will not be required to cross picket lines at St. Marys during a strike, preserving their solidarity.
Wallace added,”This is realy critically important language for us,as it preserves our power and solidarity.” She also mentioned that if St. Marys members receive pay increases exceeding 3% in 2027,Methodist members will receive a matching increase.
Mayo Clinic officials acknowledged the agreement. “Mayo Clinic is pleased to have reached a contract agreement with the allied health groups represented by the Service Employees International Union on the Methodist Campus,” officials said. “The agreement aligns with key elements of the SEIU contract at Saint Marys and how Mayo Clinic adjusted nonunion wages over the last few years.”
What’s next
With the contract secured, SEIU Healthcare Minnesota & Iowa members at Mayo Clinic Methodist Campus will focus on implementing the new terms and preparing for future negotiations at St. Marys Campus in 2027. The ability to strike provides a new dynamic in future labor discussions.
