Manila mayor Isko Moreno and Transportation Secretary vince Dizon recently inspected the North-South Commuter Railway Extension project along Old Antipolo Road corner Abad Santos in Manila, highlighting a collaborative effort that has resulted in significant revisions too the project’s right-of-way plan. Thes changes will save numerous homes and a local church from displacement.
Railway Project Prioritizes Community Preservation
The North-south Commuter Railway Extension is a vital infrastructure project aimed at improving transportation connectivity in Metro Manila. However, initial plans raised concerns about potential displacement of residents and the impact on local institutions. Recognizing these concerns, Secretary Dizon and Mayor Moreno worked closely with engineers to find a solution that balanced the needs of the project with the well-being of the community.
“Because of that, we can save all the houses here, including the church,” Dizon explained, emphasizing the triumphant revision of the original right-of-way plan to a narrower scope. This adjustment demonstrates a commitment to minimizing disruption and preserving the character of the neighborhood.
Moreno Expresses Support and Appreciation
Mayor Moreno expressed his gratitude to the national government and Secretary Dizon for their responsiveness and commitment to implementing the project. He specifically praised the swift action taken by the new DOTr Secretary.
“We want to share the energy of Secretary Vince that all the projects that will be good, especially for our countrymen, the city government will support it 101 percent,” Moreno stated. He further highlighted the city government’s proactive approach, noting that Manila imposed no objection to the project after a two-year delay, signaling a willingness to collaborate and expedite progress.
Moreno also lauded the engineering adjustments, stating, “rather of having many properties and institutions like churches and schools” affected, “there is a large portion that will not be moved, especially our neighbors here on Old Antipolo Street.” this outcome reflects a thoughtful and community-focused approach to infrastructure development.
Traffic Adjustments to Facilitate Construction
To ensure the smooth and efficient execution of the railway extension project, the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau has implemented a one-way traffic scheme on Old Antipolo Street, effective Tuesday. This temporary adjustment will provide ample space for construction equipment and the project team to operate safely and effectively.
The collaborative spirit between the national government and the City of Manila underscores a shared commitment to improving infrastructure while prioritizing the needs and preserving the heritage of local communities. This project serves as a model for future infrastructure endeavors, demonstrating that progress and community well-being can go hand in hand.
