Mazda is actively pursuing a revival of its rotary engine technology, but with a renewed focus on ensuring the engine’s direct contribution to driving performance, rather than solely functioning as a range extender. The Japanese automaker’s recent concept vehicles, including the Iconic SP, signal a potential return to the spirit of its RX-7 and RX-8 sports cars, albeit within the framework of hybrid powertrains and sustainable fuel considerations.

The company’s shift in strategy comes after exploring the rotary engine’s potential as a generator in vehicles like the MX-30 R-EV and the Vision X-Coupe. While acknowledging the efficiency of this approach, Mazda executives, including Schultze, recognize the importance of delivering the visceral driving experience that enthusiasts associate with the rotary engine. “If you want to have it more sporty then maybe you look rotary plus a more sporty oriented hybrid, more parallel hybrid rather than a series hybrid,” Schultze stated, emphasizing the desire for drivers to “feel the power of the engine directly, not only listen to it.”

The Iconic SP concept, unveiled at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show and further showcased at the April 2025 Bangkok International Motor Show, embodies this new direction. The vehicle, which closely mirrors the dimensions of the iconic FD-generation RX-7 (4,180mm long, 1,850mm wide and 1,150mm tall), features a dual-rotor rotary engine paired with electric motors. While earlier iterations of the concept produced around 365 horsepower, the potential for increased output in a production model remains a key objective.

Mazda’s commitment extends beyond simply reviving the engine; it also encompasses addressing the challenges of emissions compliance. Schultze acknowledged that meeting emissions standards is “feasible but difficult,” requiring ongoing research, and development. However, the company believes that utilizing carbon-neutral fuels could mitigate environmental concerns, allowing drivers to enjoy the performance of the rotary engine without compromising sustainability. “If you fuel this with CO2 neutral fuel, you don’t need to feel somehow ashamed [when driving it] because you can say, I’m compatible, I’m sustainable, I’m renewable,” Schultze explained.

The Iconic SP’s design pays homage to the RX-7, featuring a sleek coupe profile, low bonnet, and smooth surfacing. The vehicle’s relatively lightweight construction – 1,450kg, slightly heavier than the FD RX-7 but lighter than competitors like the BMW M2 (1,725kg) – further enhances its potential for dynamic performance. Inside, the minimalist cabin incorporates features such as Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel with paddles, a touchscreen display providing data on regenerative braking, launch control, and G-force vectoring, and a driver’s display featuring a G-force readout and a map of Monaco’s street circuit.

The development of the Iconic SP is rooted in Mazda’s broader vision for the future of driving. Masahiro Moro, Mazda President and CEO, stated at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show unveiling that the Iconic SP, with its dual rotary power generator EV powertrain, represents the company’s “dream solution” for preserving the joy of driving in the age of electrification, a quality embodied by the MX-5.

Mazda’s previous foray into rotary engine hybridization, the MX-30 R-EV, was not offered in the U.S. Due to emissions regulations. However, the company is actively working on a next-generation rotary engine designed to overcome these hurdles. The compact size of the rotary engine remains a significant advantage, allowing it to be integrated into a wide range of vehicle platforms.

The company’s Kodo design language, introduced over a decade ago, continues to shape the aesthetic of its vehicles, including the Vision X-Coupe and the Iconic SP, with no current plans for a significant overhaul. Mazda’s approach suggests a deliberate strategy of evolving its existing design principles rather than pursuing radical changes.

The potential return of a rotary-powered Mazda sports car has generated considerable excitement among enthusiasts. The Iconic SP concept demonstrates the automaker’s commitment to both its heritage and its future, signaling a possible revival of a beloved engine and a renewed focus on delivering a compelling driving experience.
