Kylian Mbappe will serve a one-match suspension following a red card received during Real Madrid’s match against Alaves. The disciplinary action follows a violent challenge on Alaves midfielder Antonio Blanco.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Tuesday that the forward will be sidelined for one game. The RFEF’s Disciplinary Committee determined that the dismissal warranted the minimum one-match sanction under article 130 of its regulations.
Incident and VAR Intervention
The incident occurred late in the first half of the Sunday match. Mbappe committed a dangerous tackle on Antonio Blanco, which initially prompted the referee to issue a yellow card.
However, after a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the official overturned the initial decision and showed Mbappe a straight red card for the violent challenge.
Following the match, Mbappe offered apologies to Antonio Blanco as well as his Real Madrid teammates for the tackle.
Impact on Upcoming Fixtures
As a result of the one-match ban, Mbappe will miss Real Madrid’s next scheduled game against Athletic on Sunday.
Despite the suspension for the Athletic fixture, reporting indicates that the Frenchman will return to the squad in time for El Clasico.
Additional Disciplinary Actions
The match against Alaves saw other disciplinary issues beyond Mbappe’s dismissal. Alaves player Manu Sanchez was also sent off during the same game for a similar challenge directed at Vinicius Jr.
Like Mbappe, Manu Sanchez will also serve a one-match ban following his expulsion from the match.
