The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a warning regarding MBBS student registration. Students admitted to the MBBS course in 2024-25 whose details are missing from the NMC portal may face difficulties in obtaining their medical registration, possibly preventing them from practicing medicine.
The NMC, the primary regulatory body for medical education in India, released a public notice after discovering that not all medical colleges had submitted complete information for students admitted during the 2024-25 academic year. india has roughly 118,000 MBBS seats. The NMC stated that only students whose information is available on the portal will be eligible for medical registration.Students whose names are not listed are advised to immediatly contact their medical college’s directorate of medical education or their counseling authority to rectify the issue.
The initial deadline for submitting student details, including the medical college name, admission date, student name, merit number, date of birth, and roll number, was Nov.8, 2024. This deadline was subsequently extended to Nov. 23 and then to Dec. 10.
The NMC’s decision to collect student data followed an internal review prompted by concerns that some colleges were not adhering to admission regulations. According to an NMC official, the review uncovered instances where students who did not meet the minimum academic requirements, such as achieving less than 50% in their 10+2 exams in physics, chemistry, and biology, were granted admission.
the official emphasized that medical colleges must ensure that admissions do not exceed their sanctioned intake capacity and that students meet all eligibility criteria, including age and qualifying marks. All MBBS students must pass the NEET-UG exam with the required percentile: 50th percentile or higher for general category students, 45th percentile or higher for physically challenged students, and 40th percentile or higher for reserved category (SC/ST/OBC) candidates.
