Updated june 02, 2025
The Britpop hit “Yes,” by McAlmont & Butler, began in a Highgate basement flat where Bernard Butler, fresh from Suede, sought to create uplifting music. Butler aimed to capture the joyous feeling he got from songs like Dusty springfield’s “I Only Want to Be With you.”
Butler, the musician and songwriter, wanted listeners to feel the sun, focusing solely on the song’s impact. he found string samples through a magazine ad, a necessity in pre-internet 1994.
Initially,Julianne Regan of All About eve and Morrissey were considered for the song.Morrissey declined after a meeting, and Kirsty MacColl wanted important changes. The pivotal moment came when Butler saw David McAlmont perform. Impressed by McAlmont and drummer Makoto Sakamoto, butler knew he found his collaborators.McAlmont quickly added lyrics, creating a powerful message of defiance and empowerment.
McAlmont, reflecting on writing and singing the song, said three artists had been offered the song before him, which motivated him. He wanted to keep it simple, drawing inspiration from Judy Garland after his flatmate critiqued his initial T. Rex-inspired idea. The lyrics, born from a personal experience of being “ghosted,” became a declaration of independence.
The recording process involved capturing Sakamoto’s explosive drumming in a Normandy chateau’s cellar and McAlmont’s vocals in the ballroom. Butler considers “Yes” his favorite work, cherishing its ability to uplift people.
