Irish Success in Belgrade
Jake McCarthy of Skibbereen, Ireland, secured a bronze medal in the men’s single sculls at the 2024 World Rowing Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, on Friday. This marks Ireland’s second medal of the championships. RTÉ Sport reports that McCarthy delivered a strong performance from the outside lane.

The race saw a dynamic competition with Turkey’s halil Kaan Koroglu initially taking the lead, followed by Julian schoeberl of Austria establishing dominance by the halfway point. Uruguay’s Felipe Kluver ultimately surged ahead in the final 500m to claim the gold medal. McCarthy fought valiantly for silver, but Schoeberl managed to hold his position for second place.
McCarthy’s Reaction and Career Milestone
The 28-year-old McCarthy previously finished fourth at the European Championships earlier in the year. He described his bronze medal as a significant achievement in his career. According to RTÉ, McCarthy stated, “It’s my first medal on the world stage, so I’m hugely delighted.”
He also highlighted the challenging conditions, noting the impact of the heat and the crucial support he received from his team. “it was a tough one, it was kind of different to other regattas in that it was more trying to handle the heat as well as everything else. Luckily I had such a good support staff this year that helped me out giving me all the tips.I probably pestered them a lot with all the questions, but luckily was able to get a medal in the end.”
Other Irish performances
The Irish team also saw action from Tiarnán O’Donnell and Sadhbh Ní Laoighre in the mixed double sculls, finishing third in their B final. Siobhán McCrohan placed fourth in the women’s lightweight single sculls A final, recording a time of 07:37.25.
