‘True Detective’ Creator Eyes McConaughey, Harrelson Return

Nic Pizzolatto, the mind behind the first season of HBO’s “True Detective,” is considering a new installment that would bring back Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Pizzolatto revealed on the nothing Left Unsaid podcast that he has a story idea too reprise McConaughey and Harrelson’s roles as Rustin Cohle and Martin Hart.
While Pizzolatto has not yet written anything, he said that conversations have taken place. Both McConaughey and Harrelson are reportedly open to the idea of revisiting their characters in the crime drama. The first season of “True Detective” garnered 11.9 million viewers.
Pizzolatto stepped away from ”True Detective” after his deal with HBO expired, pursuing other projects. Issa López took over as writer for “Night Country,” the fourth season, which became the series’ most-watched with 12.7 million viewers per episode.
Despite no longer being associated with the series, Pizzolatto reunited with McConaughey and Harrelson for a “true to Texas” ad campaign. The actors reprised their roles to advocate for film and TV production incentives in the state.
Pizzolatto said:
“I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that, who knows, maybe we’ll do it one day… It’s not something I’ve written or anything, it’s just in my head, and we’ve talked about getting back together and doing it. I think the guys are open to it, it’s just a question of whether that would ever happen or not.”
