Edmonton Oilers stars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have etched their names further into NHL history, surpassing Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier in a notable playoff statistic. The dynamic duo achieved their 29th playoff game with multiple points each, exceeding the 28 such games by Oilers legends Gretzky and Messier.
While Gretzky and Glenn Anderson hold the second-place spot with 30 games, Gretzky and Jari Kurri dominate the category with 44 multipoint games. The achievement underscores the impact of McDavid and Draisaitl on the ice, as they aim to bring Edmonton its first Stanley Cup since 1990.
Messier acknowledged the significance of McDavid and Draisaitl’s accomplishments, noting the rarity of a franchise having such generational talents. He emphasized the appreciation Oilers fans have for their current stars, recognizing their drive and determination.
Goaltender Stuart Skinner, an edmonton native, highlighted the importance of mcdavid and Draisaitl to the Oilers, acknowledging their status as two of the best players in the world.
McDavid, drafted first overall in 2015, and Draisaitl, selected third in 2014, have consistently led the Oilers. Last season, they propelled Edmonton to the Stanley Cup Final, nearly overcoming a 3-0 series deficit against the Florida Panthers.
This postseason, McDavid leads with 31 points, followed closely by Draisaitl with 29. Draisaitl has now recorded at least 10 goals in three consecutive postseasons, joining Gretzky and mike Bossy in this feat.
McDavid is on track for his third 30-point postseason, a mark previously reached by Messier and surpassed only by Gretzky. Should Draisaitl reach 30 points, they will set a new NHL record as the only teammates to achieve back-to-back 30-point postseasons.
“They’re the best players of their generation,” Messier said.
“It’s actually amazing for a franchise like Edmonton to have had the teams and the players that have come through there,” Messier said. “There are NHL teams that have been around forever and never had a Bobby Orr or Mario Lemieux. For a team that had Gretzky to now have McDavid and Draisaitl is unbelievable.”
The chemistry between McDavid and Draisaitl is evident in their on-ice performance. This postseason, the pair has factored on the same goal 73 times in the playoffs. Only three duos in NHL history have factored in on the same goal more often.
In the past two postseasons, the oilers have scored 21 goals with both McDavid and Draisaitl on the ice at 5-on-5, compared to a lower rate when neither is on the ice. This highlights their impact on the team’s offensive output.

McDavid acknowledged the telepathic communication he shares with Draisaitl, stating that a simple look can convey their understanding of the game.
“I think we’ve definitely developed a sense of understanding what the other one’s thinking in any given moment,” McDavid said. “Sometimes, yeah, all it takes is a look to know what’s going on.”
