McDavid dominant on Olympic debut

Milan, Italy – February 13, 2026 – Connor McDavid is making an immediate impact at the Milan Cortina Olympic Games, leading Canada to a decisive 5-1 victory over Switzerland. The win secured Canada’s top spot in Group A and showcased McDavid’s exceptional talent on the international stage.

McDavid, playing in his first Olympic Games, demonstrated the qualities that define his NHL brilliance – speed, shooting, and vision. He finished the game with a goal and two assists, dictating the pace of play for the Canadian team. According to Jon Cooper, Canada’s head coach, McDavid is a “phenomenal player – generational.”

Nathan MacKinnon also contributed significantly to the win, scoring a goal and adding two assists. Macklin Celebrini rounded out the scoring for Canada with a goal and an assist, forming a potent offensive trio with McDavid, and MacKinnon. Cooper noted the challenge of integrating three players who all “want the puck, need the puck,” but the chemistry between the three was evident on the ice.

The victory wasn’t solely built on offensive firepower. Sidney Crosby, a seasoned veteran chasing his third Olympic gold medal, played a supporting role, leading by example and guiding the younger players. He also found the back of the net in the third period, becoming the seventh player to reach double-digit points for Canada at Olympic Games featuring NHL players.

Crosby acknowledged the value of experience, but cautioned against relying on it solely. “It allows you to know what to expect a little bit,” he told Olympics.com on Wednesday, February 11. “But age, experience, it’s one thing. It doesn’t guarantee anything, doesn’t give you anything. You still got to go out there and do it.”

Canada’s dominant performance against Switzerland follows a 5-0 win over Czechia earlier in the tournament, as reported by the IIHF. The team appears to be hitting its stride as the Olympics progress. The win over Switzerland clinched top spot in Group A, meaning Canada will play France in their final preliminary game on Sunday, February 15.

Cooper made a strategic decision during the game, deploying the McDavid, MacKinnon, and Celebrini line when he felt the team needed a spark. The move proved successful, as the trio immediately clicked and propelled Canada to a convincing victory. The coach acknowledged that the line combination required some adjustments for other players, but the potential payoff was clear.

While Canada’s men’s hockey team is enjoying success, the Canadian Olympic team as a whole has yet to add to its medal count on Day 7 of the Games, according to reports. However, the strong performances in both men’s hockey and curling provide a positive momentum for the country as the competition continues.

McDavid’s performance on Thursday may have been his most complete on the international stage, building on his success at the Four Nations tournament last month where he scored the overtime winner against the USA to secure the title for Canada. Canada now looks ahead to their final preliminary game against France, hoping to maintain their perfect record and continue their pursuit of Olympic gold.
