McDonald’s Ireland Reports €4.68M Profit, Plans €40M Expansion
The first McDonald’s in Ireland, located on Grafton Street in Dublin, reported pre-tax profits of €4.68 million last year. The restaurant is operated by Amir Afsar’s company, Persian Restaurants Ltd, which runs several McDonald’s in Dublin, Wicklow, and Wexford.
Revenues increased by 9% from €48.28 million to €52.72 million. This profit follows a pre-tax loss of €220,497 in 2022, which was due to a €5.6 million payout to directors. In 2023, director pay fell to €531,557, significantly lower than the previous year.
Persian Restaurants Ltd also operates McDonald’s at Nutgrove and Frascati Shopping Centres. The Grafton Street location is Ireland’s oldest McDonald’s, opening in 1977. The company’s post-tax profits were €4.07 million, after paying €614,737 in corporation tax. Non-cash depreciation costs amounted to €1.24 million. At the end of December, accumulated profits totaled €19.59 million, with cash reserves of €19 million.

ND3: Amir, congratulations on your company’s impressive results at the Grafton Street McDonald’s, especially after last year’s pre-tax loss. What do you attribute this turnaround to?
Amir Afsar: Thank you! The turnaround can be attributed to a combination of factors. First, we focused on enhancing customer experience and streamlining our operations. Additionally, with our team’s collective effort, we managed to optimize costs, especially with a significant reduction in director pay this year.
ND3: You reported a revenue increase of 9%. Was there a particular strategy that led to this growth?
Amir Afsar: Absolutely. We implemented targeted marketing initiatives that connected with our local community, alongside menu enhancements that appealed to our customers. The diversification of our promotional campaigns, especially digital marketing, has played a key role in boosting foot traffic and sales.
ND3: With McDonald’s planning a €40 million expansion in Ireland, how do you view your company’s role in this growth?
Amir Afsar: We are excited about the expansion opportunity. Our experience running several stores across Dublin, Wicklow, and Wexford puts us in a strong position to contribute to this growth. We aim to explore further opportunities for new locations as part of this expansion, potentially creating even more jobs.
ND3: Can you share insights on the financial aspects, particularly regarding director pay and profit margins?
Amir Afsar: Last year’s profits were heavily impacted by a high payout to directors, which we managed to significantly reduce this year. Keeping pay in check allowed us to allocate resources where they matter most. Our non-cash depreciation costs also reflect wise investments in maintaining our facilities while ensuring our profit margins improved.
ND3: Your Grafton Street location is quite iconic, being Ireland’s oldest McDonald’s. How does this heritage impact your operations?
Amir Afsar: The heritage of Grafton Street is a massive asset. We pride ourselves on retaining that classic McDonald’s experience while modernizing operations. This unique position provides us with a loyal customer base, and we continuously strive to honor that legacy through quality service and products.
ND3: Lastly, what are your plans for the future with Persian Restaurants Ltd?
Amir Afsar: We plan to continue expanding our brand and exploring new restaurant locations. We’re particularly focused on maintaining high standards and generating employment in the local communities we serve. With the planned investments by McDonald’s in Ireland, we’re optimistic about what’s ahead and excited to be part of this growth.
ND3: Thank you, Amir, for sharing these insights with us. We wish you continued success with your McDonald’s locations.
Amir Afsar: Thank you for having me! It’s been a pleasure.
