Price Increases and Consumer Reaction
McDonald’s China has recently increased prices on a majority of its menu items, leading to criticism from customers amid concerns about job security and wage stagnation, according to reports from December 17, 2024. The price hikes, ranging up to 1 yuan (approximately US$0.14),have drawn attention as of the chain’s popularity as an affordable dining option.
Social media users have expressed their frustration, with some commenting that McDonald’s prices are rising while their salaries remain unchanged. Others noted that the value of the “1+1” meal deal, introduced in 2019 at 12 yuan and increased to 13.9 yuan in 2023, is diminishing with further price adjustments.
According to the McDonald’s China online menu, the price of a Big Mac, Double Filet-O-Fish, and McNuggets each increased by 1 yuan. Side dishes, including medium fries, crispy fried chicken, and McFlurries, saw a price increase of 0.5 yuan.
McDonald’s Response
McDonald’s China confirmed the price adjustments to Jiemian News, stating the company remains dedicated to providing “value-for-money choices.” As of December 17, 2024, the company had not responded to a request for comment from the South China Morning Post.
