McIlroy Aims for Travelers Championship Win After U.S. Open Disappointment
Updated June 18, 2025

CROMWELL, Conn. — World No. 2 Rory McIlroy is set to compete at the Travelers Championship, beginning Thursday, seeking a strong rebound after a lackluster showing at last week’s U.S. Open in Oakmont, Pa.
Despite a final-round surge with six birdies that led to a 19th-place tie, McIlroy expressed dissatisfaction. The finish secured his spot on the European Ryder Cup team at Bethpage Black, N.Y., but fell short of his aspirations, considering his earlier victories at The Players Championship, Pebble Beach, and The Masters.
Frustration boiled over during the U.S. Open, with McIlroy smashing a tee marker. he also initially declined media interviews, later stating, “I feel like I’ve earned the right to do whatever I want to do.”
Though, McIlroy struck a more optimistic note Wednesday, emphasizing the Travelers Championship’s appeal after a challenging major. “After a week like I had at Oakmont last week… you’re excited to come back and play again,” McIlroy said. “This is the perfect sort of chaser for what Oakmont was last week.” He added that he was happy to be on a course where he felt he could make birdies.
The TPC River Highlands course presents numerous opportunities for birdies and lower scores, a welcome change for McIlroy. He acknowledged the grind some players face, especially those playing their fourth consecutive tournament. The Travelers Championship offers a chance to relax and score without excessive struggle.
The Travelers Championship marks McIlroy’s last PGA Tour appearance before returning to Europe. He is slated to compete in the Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland in July.
What’s next
following the Travelers Championship, McIlroy will focus on preparing for the Open Championship in his native Northern Ireland, where he anticipates significant attention and high expectations.
