Rory McIlroy “Concerned” About US Open Form After Driver Issues
Updated June 08, 2025
Rory McIlroy, the Northern Irish golf star, has voiced his concerns about his current form as he prepares for the US Open next week. His struggles with a new driver at the Canadian Open have left him searching for answers.
McIlroy, 36, missed the cut at the Canadian Open after finishing well down the leaderboard. A second-round 78, eight over par, highlighted his difficulties in adapting to the new equipment.
His previous driver was deemed non-conforming just before last month’s US PGA championship, where McIlroy finished in 47th place. In Toronto, using a 44-inch driver, he hit only 13 of 28 fairways and carded a disastrous quadruple-bogey eight on the fifth hole after a poor tee shot.
“Of course it concerns me,” mcilroy said. “You don’t want to shoot high scores like the one I did today.”
McIlroy had hoped the new driver would resolve his teeing issues, but that didn’t happen. He emphasized the importance of fairway accuracy at Oakmont for the US Open. Finding the missing piece in his driving game is now his priority.
“Obviously going to oakmont next week, what you need to do more than anything else there is hit fairways,” McIlroy stated.”I’m still sort of searching for the missing piece off the tee.”
What’s next
McIlroy will focus on intensive practice to regain his confidence off the tee before heading to Oakmont for the US Open. He aims to fine-tune his driver and improve his fairway accuracy to contend at the major championship.
