Oscar Piastri, the Australian Formula 1 driver for McLaren, has publicly criticized the team’s strategic decisions during the Canadian Grand Prix, calling the approach “looked like idiots” after a failed tyre gamble cost the squad valuable points. The incident, which unfolded on May 25, 2026, in Montreal, has sparked internal debate within the team as they assess the fallout from the race.
McLaren’s decision to start both Piastri and teammate Lando Norris on intermediate tyres during the rain-affected race backfired. The strategy, intended to capitalize on early wet conditions, proved disastrous as both drivers struggled with tyre performance and were forced to pit early for slicks. The move left the team without points in a race where they had hoped to capitalize on their competitive form.

“It was raining and between the anthem and getting in the car, it was pretty wet on the ground. You could clearly tell where it was wet and dry,” Piastri said, reflecting on the race. “Getting to the grid on slicks was not easy, getting to full throttle was tough. Unfortunately for us, it stopped raining. If it rained a little bit more we would have looked like heroes. It didn’t, so we looked like idiots.”
The decision to use intermediates was one of seven in the top 10 grid positions, but McLaren’s execution of the strategy was questioned. The race was further complicated by two grid resets, which disrupted the teams’ preparations. Piastri highlighted the confusion, stating, “There was 2 grid resets. 2 opportunities to change tyres. 2 times Oscar said we have the wrong tyre on, and you still didn’t bring him/them in.”
McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, defended the decision, emphasizing the team’s confidence in their data. “We looked at the conditions and believed the intermediate tyres would give us an advantage,” Stella said. “Unfortunately, the rain stopped earlier than expected, and the decision didn’t pan out. We take it on the chin and will review the data to avoid similar mistakes in the future.”
The failed gamble has raised questions about McLaren’s race strategy, particularly as the team competes in a tightly contested season. Norris, who started third on the grid, initially led the race but pitted
