Measles Outbreak in Paraguay: 49 Confirmed Cases and Ongoing Response
What Happened?
Paraguay’s General Directorate of Health Surveillance has confirmed two additional cases of measles, bringing teh total number of confirmed cases as the outbreak began in August to 49.These newly confirmed cases are considered retrospective, meaning they developed symptoms earlier but were recently diagnosed, and are unlikely to lead to further retroactive identifications.
Both new cases are located in nueva Germania, San Pedro department, and exhibited symptoms starting in August. The vast majority of cases – 48 out of 49 – are linked to the importation of the measles virus, while one case represents local transmission.
Geographic Distribution of cases
The outbreak is heavily concentrated in the San Pedro department, with 47 of the 49 confirmed cases originating there. A detailed breakdown of cases by department is as follows:
| Department | Number of Cases |
|---|---|
| San Pedro | 47 |
| Tacuaty | 2 |
| Nueva germania (San Pedro) | 16 |
| San Rosa del Aguaray (San Pedro) | 8 |
| Central | 2 |
| Mora (Central) | 1 |
| Mariano Roque Alonso (Central) | 1 |
Health officials are also investigating three suspected cases: two in San Pedro and one in Asunción.
Public Health Response and Vaccination Efforts
In response to the outbreak, Paraguay’s Ministry of Public Health has been conducting house-to-house vaccination campaigns. Ultima Hora reports that over 680 doses of the measles vaccine have been administered in the Central department alone thru these targeted efforts.
These vaccination drives are crucial to achieving herd immunity and preventing further spread of the disease. The measles vaccine is highly effective, providing long-lasting protection with two doses.
Understanding Measles and its Risks
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms typically begin with fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, followed by a rash that spreads over the body.
Complications from measles can be severe, including pneumonia, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), and even death. Young children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable.
What to Do If You Suspect Measles
if you or someone you know develops symptoms of measles, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.Contact your healthcare provider and inform them of your symptoms and any potential exposure to measles. Avoid contact with others to prevent further spread of the virus.
