The Central Java Provincial Government is intensifying immunization and early detection efforts following the discovery of 2,188 suspected measles cases across the region. This surge is part of a broader national crisis that has placed Indonesia as the country with the second-highest number of measles cases globally, trailing only Yemen.
According to data from the Central Java Provincial Health Office, the suspected cases are distributed across several districts. Kudus Regency reported the highest number with 501 cases, followed by Brebes with 202, Cilacap with 119, Pati with 72, and Klaten with 54.
Of the total suspected cases in Central Java, 144 have been laboratory-confirmed as positive for measles and 18 for rubella. The highest concentrations of confirmed measles cases were identified in Cilacap Regency with 21 cases, Banyumas with 20, and Pati with 20. Klaten recorded six confirmed measles cases and one case of rubella.
Provincial Response and Detection Strategies
Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi stated on April 8, 2026, that managing measles is a top priority for the provincial government in collaboration with city and regency authorities. To accelerate the immunization process, the government is integrating measles vaccinations with existing community health initiatives.
These initiatives include the Free Health Check (CKG) and the mobile specialist doctor programme, known as Speling, both of which have already reached the village level. During an inspection at the Klaten Tengah Community Health Centre on April 8, 2026, Governor Luthfi urged parents to ensure their children complete their vaccinations promptly.
Public health officials are advising the community to monitor children for specific symptoms. Governor Luthfi noted that if signs such as fever and red rashes are observed, parents should immediately seek an examination at a community health centre or from a doctor.
National Outbreak Trends
The situation in Central Java mirrors a severe nationwide trend. Data from the Indonesian Health Ministry indicates that as of February 20, 2026, Indonesia had recorded 10,453 suspected measles cases since the start of the year, including 8,372 confirmed infections and six deaths.
The ministry has identified 45 measles outbreaks across 29 regencies in 11 provinces. These include populous regions such as North Sumatra, Banten, East Java, Central Java, and West Java.
This surge follows a significant increase in 2025, where Indonesia recorded 63,769 suspected measles cases and 67 deaths. This represented a 147 percent increase compared to 2024, with outbreaks reported in 87 districts and cities during that year.
On a global scale, the United States’ Global Measles Outbreak Tracker reports that Indonesia currently holds the second-highest number of cases in the world. Yemen reported the highest number, with 11,288 infections in 2026.
Drivers of the Outbreak
Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin has attributed the rise in cases to a decline in childhood immunization coverage. He specifically pointed to the influence of anti-vaccine misinformation and hoaxes as a primary cause for parental reluctance to immunize children.

The impact of this decline is evident in the patient data; approximately 67 percent of confirmed cases had no history of immunization.
Some people are still reluctant to immunize their children because they are influenced by false information or hoaxes spread by anti-vaccine groups. In fact, vaccination has been proven effective in preventing disease and protecting children from the risk of death

Clinical Risks and Complications
Health officials warn that measles is not a mild illness and can lead to fatal complications in unvaccinated children. All six measles deaths recorded in Indonesia in early 2026 involved toddlers under the age of five who had received no vaccinations.
Before their deaths, these children suffered from severe complications, including:
- Bronchopneumonia
- Pneumonia
- Diarrhea
In other regions, such as Malang City in East Java, the government has intensified the administration of the measles-rubella (MR) vaccine. Through the School Children Immunization Month (BIAS) and CKG programs, officials in Malang are targeting 37,245 students following the discovery of measles cases in five children in the city.
Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin has called for urgent national immunization efforts, warning that the disease poses fatal risks to children and could worsen during holiday periods, such as the Eid holiday.
