Measles Elimination in The Americas: Canada at Risk
Measles elimination Status in the Americas at Risk
The Americas-North, Central, and South-holds a unique position in global health, having previously achieved the complete cessation of endemic measles transmission. however, this notable public health achievement is now facing a serious threat of reversal, according to reporting from STAT News on November 3, 2025.
An expert committee of the Pan American Health Association (PAHO) convened in Mexico City this week to assess current measles transmission data across the region. A key focus of their review is a substantial and prolonged measles outbreak in Canada, which is highly likely to result in a determination that both Canada and the entire Americas region have lost their measles elimination status.
