The United States is experiencing a resurgence of measles, with February 12, 2026, marking 910 confirmed cases reported nationwide in 2026. This increase is raising concerns among public health officials, who are emphasizing the importance of vaccination as a preventative measure.

Rising Cases and Outbreaks

According to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on February 13, 2026, measles cases have been reported in 24 jurisdictions: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York City, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. An additional six cases have been identified in international visitors to the U.S.

The CDC reports five new outbreaks in 2026, with a significant 90% of confirmed cases (822 out of 910) linked to outbreaks – 62 originating in 2026 and 760 stemming from outbreaks that began in 2025. This demonstrates the persistence of the virus and the potential for continued spread.

For comparison, the entirety of 2025 saw 2,280 confirmed measles cases across 45 jurisdictions, including 25 cases among international visitors. That year also experienced 49 outbreaks, with 89% of cases (2,034 of 2,280) being outbreak-associated.

The Importance of Vaccination

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis (brain swelling), and even death. Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect against measles. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective, providing two doses for approximately 97% protection.

The current rise in cases is occurring against a backdrop of waning public trust in vaccines, a trend that health officials are actively addressing. The challenges are multifaceted, as highlighted by reports of fear within the Somali community in Minnesota hindering vaccination progress. This underscores the need for targeted outreach and culturally sensitive communication strategies.

Impact on Healthcare Systems

The increasing number of measles cases is placing a strain on healthcare systems. Doctors are bearing the burden of diagnosing and treating patients, as well as responding to outbreaks and addressing public concerns. The situation is exacerbated by the concept of ‘medical freedom’ – a movement that prioritizes individual choice over public health recommendations – which some reports suggest is contributing to the current outbreak.

The healthcare industry as a whole is navigating significant financial and regulatory pressures, but opportunities for growth are emerging in areas like home-supported therapy and specialty pharmacy. However, managing and containing outbreaks like this measles resurgence requires substantial resources and coordinated efforts.

Looking Ahead

The U.S. Is at risk of losing its measles elimination status, a designation achieved in 2000. Maintaining elimination requires high vaccination rates and rapid response to outbreaks. The current situation demands a renewed commitment to vaccination efforts and a proactive approach to addressing vaccine hesitancy.

Public health officials are urging individuals to review their vaccination records and ensure they are up-to-date on their MMR vaccinations. Parents are encouraged to vaccinate their children according to the recommended schedule. Resources are available from the CDC and local health departments to provide information and address concerns about measles, and vaccination.

The CDC provides resources for communities experiencing measles outbreaks, including sample community letters and a toolkit for preparedness. These resources aim to facilitate effective communication and coordinated responses to contain the spread of the virus.

The situation remains dynamic, and ongoing monitoring and reporting of measles cases are crucial for informing public health strategies and protecting communities. Continued vigilance and a commitment to vaccination are essential to prevent further outbreaks and safeguard public health.
