Bangladesh is responding to a measles outbreak that has resulted in at least 38 child deaths this year and hundreds of infections, prompting the government to launch an emergency nationwide immunization campaign.
The health ministry has confirmed at least 674 measles cases across the country this year. While reported suspected deaths have reached 94, Health Services Division secretary Kamruzzaman Chowdhury stated that 15 deaths were confirmed following laboratory testing of 33 samples conducted with support from the World Health Organization.
Regional Spread and High-Risk Areas
The outbreak has been most severe in the northwestern Rajshahi region, where health authorities have increased case-tracking and surveillance. Other areas reporting cases include the capital city of Dhaka, as well as Mymensingh, Chapainawabganj, Pabna, Natore, Chattogram, and Khulna.
In the Rajshahi division, some hospitals have faced disruptions to ICU services due to staff shortages, occurring alongside the surge in measles cases.
Emergency Public Health Response
To contain the spread, the Bangladeshi government has scheduled an emergency nationwide immunization drive to begin on April 5, 2026. The campaign will prioritize high-risk, densely packed urban areas.

As part of the response, the government has lowered the eligible vaccination age to six months, down from the previous threshold of nine months. This adjustment comes as health officials, including Sylhet Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr. Janmejoy Dutta, noted that some infected children were as young as five to six months old and were previously ineligible for the vaccine.
Causes and Risk Factors
The current outbreak is attributed to low vaccination rates and a missed previous vaccine drive, compounded by vaccine shortages. Public health experts emphasize that measles is among the most infectious pathogens and requires a 95 percent vaccination rate within a population to prevent transmission.
The Directorate General of Health Services identified the groups at the highest risk as:
- Unvaccinated children.
- Children who have not completed the required two-dose measles schedule.
- Malnourished children, who are more prone to severe complications such as encephalitis and pneumonia.
Health officials are also investigating reports of children becoming infected despite having received the vaccine.

Measles is a viral infection transmitted through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or breathes. Initial symptoms often resemble a common cold, followed by a distinctive rash that typically starts on the face and behind the ears before spreading across the body in raised, blotchy patches.
The situation in Bangladesh mirrors a global trend of rising measles outbreaks linked to falling vaccination rates. According to the World Health Organization and UNICEF, children under five are at the highest risk due to their developing immune systems.
Global data highlights the severity of the disease: an estimated 95,000 people, primarily children under five, died from measles in 2024. On an annual basis, approximately 136,000 people worldwide die from the virus and its associated complications.
